Blinds and ShadesBlinds and shades are used to cover windows. They are part of the window coverings industry, which is part of the broader home textiles and home furnishings industry. Blinds and shades are considered hard window coverings. Even if they feature soft, billowing Roman shades or soft, honeycombed slats, they are referred to as hard because they are operational. Blinds are multi-part, slatted panels, typically horizontal, operated by a string and pulley system contained in a headrail that lifts slats up from the bottom of the window to reveal the view. Some modern shades are designed to affix to the bottom of the window frame and roll up instead of the more traditional top-to-bottom format. Vertical, slatted blinds operate from side to side. Shades are distinguished from blinds in that they are simpler—generally one panel that may be billowy or flat and is pulled up or rolls up from the top. Blinds and shades are functional products designed to filter light and provide privacy. While privacy is valued, many people also desire a view. Blinds and shades allow both, since they are easy to open fully, partially, or close completely.

Curtains and DrapesCurtains are fabric panels that are most often sold in pairs. You’ll find curtains in a wide range of widths, lengths, fabrics, colors, and patterns, making them a versatile and popular choice for every room of the home, even bathrooms and kitchens. The differences between curtains and drapes, however, is that drapes are lined, sometimes with fabric heavy enough to block out all outside light, making them perfect for bedroom use. Drapes (sometimes called draperies) are long enough to reach from the top of the window to the floor, sometimes even puddling a bit beneath the window. Heavy, somewhat stiff fabrics are the norm for drapes, including luxury materials like velvet, damask, or silk.
Curtains and draperies are chameleons. They work hard at blocking light and sound, heat and cold. They're also extraordinarily decorative and add enormous personality to a room. Traditionally, windows were treated to three types of curtains: a sheer/glass curtain (to filter light), blackout/heavy curtain (to block out light), and top decorative (like Swag, Valance, Cornices and Pelmet). |

Motorized System for Window TreatmentsMotorized blinds and curtains can be opened and closed simply by touching a button, a remote control, or an app on a smartphone. Window coverings are a proven way to reduce solar gain and prevent heat loss, and if they are this easy to open and close, it's much more likely you'll remember to do so to benefit you and your environment. Additionally, the ability to set schedules to open and close them at specific times means you may never have to worry about them at all.

Floor SolutionIt goes without saying that hard surfaces can be slippery, and they’re not much fun to land on when slips and falls do happen. Carpet not only provides a soft landing surface – which can be especially helpful in baby’s rooms – it also helps to prevent some falls in the first place, particularly on stairs. Hardwood stairs present a safety concern, especially when there are very young or elderly residents in the home or occupants with mobility issues. Properly selected carpet increases safety by preventing many slips and falls.
